Which type of gas boiler do you need?
Choosing a heating system with a high-efficiency condensing boiler and the correct heating controls can make a significant difference to your heating bills over time. There are three main types of gas boiler:
Combination (Combi) Boilers
These boilers heat water instantaneously on opening a hot tap, so there is no need for a storage cylinder - saving space and simplifying installation.
System Boilers
Designed to generate heat for your home and store hot water in a separate cylinder. The cylinder can be situated anywhere in your home with no need for a tank in the loft.
Regular Boilers
Work in conjunction with a hot water storage cylinder and cold water top-up tanks to provide both central heating and hot water. Ideal for homes with existing traditional systems.

Types of oil boiler
Oil fired boilers can be just as compact as gas boilers - wall or floor mounted, clean and quiet. The two most popular choices are standard (conventional) or combination (combi) boilers, both available as condensing models.
Standard (Conventional) Oil Boiler
A conventional system incorporates a boiler, feed and expansion cistern, and a hot water cylinder - usually in the airing cupboard. Most suitable for larger households where significant quantities of hot water are needed on demand.
Combination (Combi) Oil Boilers
The high-efficiency condensing combi oil boiler is a space-saving choice that now accounts for well over half of all new domestic boilers installed in Britain each year. No separate storage cylinder required.
Condensing Oil Boilers
Both standard and combi oil boilers are available as condensing models. An extra heat exchanger recycles exhaust gases to pre-heat the system water, reducing energy consumption. The energy savings typically repay the additional cost within 2 to 4 years.
